Chemistry MS Program Requirements
Core classes – Students must take core classes from three different core areas.
Analytical: CHEM 521, 624
Biochemistry: CHEM 660, 662
Environmental: CHEM 651
Inorganic: CHEM 646
Organic: CHEM 613, 614, 617
Physical: CHEM 633, 732
Chemistry Electives – Students must take 3 (thesis) or 6 (nonthesis) credits of Chemistry electives.
Any course with a CHEM prefix and course number of 511 or above qualifies as a chemistry elective except for CHEM 690, 798 or 799.
Electives in related fields – Students must take 6 credits of electives in related fields.
Any graduate-level course with a CHEM prefix at the 511 or above number will fulfill this requirement except for CHEM 790, 798 or 799. Courses taught by other departments may also be used to satisfy this requirement, although it is a bit difficult to provide specifics for this category. In general, any class in Biology, Physics, or Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the graduate level can be used to fulfill requirements in this category. Courses from other programs such as Mathematics and Environmental Science and Policy can also be used to fill this requirement in many cases, but not in every case. Students should contact the graduate coordinator before registering for an elective course outside of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department offerings.
Nonthesis option 670/796 Requirement
Students in the nonthesis option are required to take 3 credits (combined) of 670 and/or 796. CHEM 670 is a teaching practicum class where the student teaches an introductory laboratory (usually general chemistry). Students receive on credit for each laboratory they teach. CHEM 796 is a Directed Readings and Research class which requires students to complete a library- or laboratory-based research project under the guidance of a department faculty member. Students can earn anywhere from 1 to 3 credits for CHEM 796 depending on the scope of the project. All research projects used to satisfy this requirement must be approved by the graduate committee prior to registration.
