![Re-emergence, Paintings and Sculpture by Cher Shaffer](../images/2002/reemergence_2.gif)
Cher Shaffer's work embodies Appalachian experience, yet departs from the
conventional expectations of Folk Art in that it is an expression of her
Native
American, African American and German heritage. This exhibition includes
a
spectrum of works that range from her early paintings of traditional folk
art scenes and a number of richly colored fantasy environments to three-dimensional
spirit dolls, which are used as talismans and healing objects. Shaffer’s
work has
appeared in the publication O, Appalachia: Artists of the Southern Mountains.
