Lars Janson: A Photographer's Journeys

The late Lars Janson’s photographic studies focus on local, national and international landscape and urban images. Janson, a native Washingtonian, turned his energy to photography after a career as a Federal Trade Commission lawyer. Although largely self-taught, he attended a variety of photographic workshops including a class instructed by the renowned landscape photographer, Ansel Adams. From Adams he learned the value of what Adams termed " previsualization" and the craft necessary to achieve the results intended. However, Janson’s prints were uniquely his own; as one reviewer commented, " His work is arresting on its own merit."

In 2000, the photography program at George Mason received a generous donation of Lars Janson’s photographic equipment from his wife Katherine Janson. The Department of Art and Visual Technology would like to thank her for this wonderful contribution to the program.
